Choosing a Cabin Category
Where the price of a reservation moves the most.
Request a Cruise Reservation QuoteCabin choice is where the price of a reservation moves the most. The type of cabin matters, but so does its category, which reflects size, deck and position on the ship.
The Four Basic Types
| Type | What you get | Booking tip |
|---|---|---|
| Inside | No window; usually the lowest fare | Good value if you spend little time in the cabin |
| Ocean view | A window or porthole; no balcony | Check whether the view is obstructed by lifeboats |
| Balcony | A private veranda | Balcony sizes vary; check the square footage |
| Suite | More space and often extra perks | Perks differ widely by line; compare what is included |
Choosing a Specific Cabin vs a Guarantee
When you book a specific cabin, you know exactly where you will sleep. When you book a guarantee, you pay for a category (or better) and the line assigns the cabin later — sometimes weeks before sailing. Guarantees can be cheaper and occasionally end in an upgrade, but you give up control over location. If you are prone to seasickness, sensitive to noise or traveling with others who want to be nearby, choose your cabin. Our sister site Cruise Upgrades has guarantee cabins explained in depth.

Location Matters as Much as Type
Midship, lower-deck cabins tend to feel the least motion. Cabins under the pool deck, near nightclubs or above the theater can be noisy. Connecting cabins suit families, and accessible cabins are limited and should be booked early. Before you confirm, look at the deck plan above, below and beside your cabin. Cruise Ship Deck Plans explains the best cabin locations, so we will not repeat it here.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- How many people can sleep in the cabin, and how are the beds configured?
- Is the view obstructed, partly or fully?
- What is directly above and below the cabin?
- Does the category come with any perks, such as priority boarding or dining?
- Is a guarantee available, and what is the saving compared with choosing a cabin?
Cabin Category Questions
What is a cabin category?
Lines price cabins in categories based on type, size and location. Two cabins of the same type may sit in different categories because one is higher or more central.
Is a guarantee cabin a good idea?
It can be, if you are flexible about location. You pay for a category and the line assigns a specific cabin later, sometimes in a higher category.
Booking for Three or More
Many standard cabins sleep two in a bed and one or two more in pull-down berths or a sofa bed. These cabins can be tight, and third and fourth guests are often priced differently from the first two. Families sometimes find that two connecting or adjoining cabins cost little more than one crowded room. Ask for both options when you request a quote.
