Cruise Final Payment
The date that changes everything about your reservation.
Request a Cruise Reservation QuoteFinal payment is the turning point of every cruise reservation. Before it, changes are relatively easy and refundable deposits come back. After it, cancellation penalties usually apply and many options close. Each line sets its own final payment date, which varies with sailing length, destination and sometimes cabin type.
Find Your Date
Your final payment date is printed on your booking confirmation and invoice, and shown in the line’s online account. Put it in your calendar with a reminder a week or two before. Many lines cancel bookings automatically if the balance is not received, and you can lose your cabin and your fare.
Your Pre-Payment Checklist
- Confirm every guest’s name, date of birth and citizenship against their documents.
- Check the fare once more for a lower price you can re-price to.
- Review add-ons you have pre-paid and decide on any you still want.
- Confirm travel insurance is in place, including cancellation cover.
- Make sure flights and pre-cruise hotels line up with the sailing.
- Check that loyalty numbers and any special requests are on the booking.

After Final Payment
Once paid, you will usually be able to complete online check-in closer to sailing, choose an arrival time and receive luggage tags and boarding documents. If you must cancel now, penalties typically grow as the sailing approaches; travel insurance is what protects you here. Booking a cruise that is already inside the final payment window works differently — our sister site Last Minute Cruising covers booking inside the final payment window.
Paying in Installments
Between deposit and final payment, many lines accept partial payments, which helps spread the cost. Check that the full balance is cleared by the due date.
If You Cannot Pay on Time
Contact the line or your advisor before the due date, not after. Sometimes a short extension is possible, or the booking can be moved to a later sailing while it is still before final payment. Once a booking is cancelled for non-payment, the cabin returns to inventory and you may have to rebook at the current fare, which could be higher.
What Your Final Invoice Should Show
- The total fare for every guest, with taxes, fees and port expenses.
- Any pre-paid gratuities, packages or excursions.
- Deposits and payments already received.
- The balance due and the date it is due.
Cards, Points and Payment Methods
Most lines accept major credit and debit cards for deposits and balances, and some let you split payment across cards. Paying by credit card can add protections offered by your card issuer, and some travel-rewards cards earn extra points on travel purchases. Check with your card provider which benefits apply to cruise bookings.
